Laundry Time!

Okay…I feel a little boring to post about laundry, but now as I am jobless, many of the household chores are now mine ALONE. Eek! House work is not my forte, as many of you know…I used to hate it. But I changed my perception of it when it became my new job.

So laundry.

It’s a dirty word in my book.

Liquid Detergent. First off, there are almost no liquid detergents here. Can you believe it? There is one name-brand, Skip, one Pick N’ Pay brand liquid detergent, and Woolite,  in most grocery stores. I choose to use it still, because it’s what I’ve always used. And I heard that it doesn’t “gunk up” the washing machines here like powder does.

Fabric softener. It is made for two types of washing. Machine washing and washing by hand; the latter is “no-rinse” to make life easier. I think many people, especially those who love in townships wash clothing by hand. The most popular brand StaSoft, no Downy or Snuggle, like in the USA. Here, you can buy cheaper re-fills that you add water to. It saves money and create less waste. Perfect in my book.

Dryer Sheets. No one has ever heard of them here!! It was unbelievable when we first looked for them. We have only found them in one grocery store, a brand called SpunSoft. And the check-out lady had no clue what it was. The fabric softener here also takes care of the dryer’s needs. We have not used them after a few months. Our clothes are basically the same…

The washing machines are typically front-load and are smaller than the Bosch we had back in the USA. This means I have to do more loads…waaah! I typically do 1-2 loads ever 2-3 days, it averages out to about 7 loads a week. I’m sure all the mothers out there are laughing at me right now…and that’s ok. I’m preparing myself slowly.

Laundromats. Self-serve Laundromats are few and far between. If you don’t have access to a washing machine and don’t want to hand wash everything, typically, you would bring all your clothing and unmentionables to a Laundromat where they will wash and fold your things for you. We have not done this, but I have taken our doggie bed (a large queen-sized comforter) to one  because it didn’t fit in our washer. It cost me 65 Rand, basically $10! Ugh. Luckily our washer at our new place fits it just right.

Where is your and dryer? In the USA, I’ve had washers in sheds and in basements. Here, we have had it in a room accessible from the outside, and both fit; in our new place, the washer in in the bathroom and the dryer in the ground floor common room. I know that in Europe, washers are often in the kitchen. I’ve never liked the kitchen idea; the bathroom is growing on me. However I think that most people in the USA do not like it in the bathroom.  What are your thoughts on placement of washers and dryers?

Since moving to our new place, we have a clothesline as well, so I have been using it for some things, to save energy for SA and money for my landlord. I’ve learned that I’d rather tumble dry my towels because they become stiff as a board outside. Sometimes I’ll dry my clothes outside to “nearly dry” them tumble them a bit to get them a little softer. Kinda works.

I know, really deep… haha.

2: A day in the life; AKA Our Stuff is Here!

We learned on Friday that our things had arrived and were given either Monday or Friday as options for delivery. The hubs and I went back and forth about which day was best to have it done. While on the phone to confirm for Friday, he jokingly said “or tomorrow...” They looked up the availability and called back saying they could be here Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

9:28 a.m.- We got a call from the delivery team saying that they’d be here at 10:00 or 10:15!  We quickly dress, plan where the boxes will go, and park the car outside of the driveway.

11:00 a.m.- We try to call the number that had called us at 9:28; no answer. I start to wonder if they’ve been hijacked and that we will never see our stuff.

They're here!
11:30 a.m.- They finally arrive. We split where the boxes go to either the extra bedroom, the dining room, or the lounge. They have trouble opening the boxes and are kinda silly.
Unloading the first container. Devil's Peak in the background.

Being silly! Can you see that the guy with the hat on only has half a pinkie on his left hand?
12:30 p.m.- They are done and gone. It was so much better that the delivery was today- there would have been tons of traffic and no parking if we had done it during the week! We started sorting out the electronics first- the television, desktop computer, etc.; and then decided we needed some hardware to make it all work.

1:30 p.m.- We go to Canal Walk and buy something different than what we thought we needed, but it was much cheaper. We had lunch at KFC again- no “zinger”mishaps this time. Phew!

4:30 p.m.- We come back home and P spends time getting frustrated by wires, but was ultimately successful! He is always so good at setting things up.

6:30 p.m.- Dinner at Primi Piatti; I have a California pizza and he has a curry/red sauce fusion pasta.

7:30 p.m. – We go to see the movie Unknown. P left it saying “Who knew Liam Neeson could be such a bad ass?!”

And Today:
We sorted out all the books he’d packed for his office at work and we drove them over.

I practiced my belly dance routine. Did I mention I’m in a performance on the 14th?

Then we spent several hours opening boxes of clothes and trying to organize them in the BICs (built in cupboards). P was done much sooner than I was because I kept trying on clothes. I’m such a girl sometimes!
The boxes in the spare bedroom. Mostly clothes, crafty stuff, and camping gear.

We ate leftovers from Primi and then had a braai- grilled steak and corn! Yummy.

We watched the end of West Wing Season Two; I ironed while watching (all our clothes are wrinkly!).

We also watched the movie The Switch. We both liked it.

Then we called some of the mothers in our lives to wish them:
Happy Mother’s Day!

I Spy: Shoes and Jewelry.

Well, in my post here, I mentioned that I have three pairs of shoes right now. So I decided to give them all some credit…and without further ado:
My tennis shoes.
These are actually my first pair of Nikes. I'm usually a New Balance kind of girl.

My flip flops, both made by Reef. Please ignore the sock imprint on my feet! Also, please give me props for the toenail art- I did it myself! With a toothpick! Apparently it is very rare to find a professional that can do it here in Cape Town.

My casual flip flips.

My "dressy" flip flops. Not so fancy now that they got wet :(

Moving across the world with jewelry leaves a bit of a quandary. Do you bring it all? Do you leave it all in storage? I did a bit of both, bringing some stuff I cared about and some, not so much. I’ve taken a few pictures of the pieces that I love and have with me here.
Handmade saguaro with silver/turquoise. Something to remind me of home.
I love Bulova watches. I even wore one at my wedding!
A necklace made out of a spoon. Bought at the 4th Avenue Street Fair.

Something my father gave me. It has peridot. I wish I had brought something my mother gave me.

This next one is a Christmas piece that my hubby bought for me from Olive Bungalow. I picked it out for myself- have you ever done this? I'm just so particular...

There is a "bad husband story" that needs to be told. He bought it, fully wrapped, just before we went out to dinner and he was so excited to see it that he opened it, MY PRESENT, in front of me at the restaurant.  Then he made me wait until Christmas to get it. Has this ever happened to you? I didn't think so. I'm pretty sure that I will be telling this for years to come....

It is so unique because it is one piece of stone, doesn't it look like a painting?!

Thanks for looking!

I Spy: Things Around my Home.

To see a general tour of my rental house, look here.

I'm adding pictures of some of the details in the house. We do not have any of our belongings, so I cannot show you my fabulous (thats supposed to sound ironic) decorating skills. I have bought three things that decorate our mantle. I also added some pictures of the few things we brought with us that I cherish.
Enjoy!

First, Some architectural details of the house:
At the base of the hallway archway.
Our bookcase, with the books we have bought since being here. Top shelf books still need to be read, second shelf books have been read (by one or both of us). The other shelf has free maps that I have picked up about South Africa.

The dining room fireplace. Sunflowers.
The Lounge (living room) fireplace. Ships. (Also- ignore the ugly wires)
The three things I've bought for decoration: A shadowbox display (it has lovely fittings), and two animals to go in it.

All three together.
This is a donkey, if you can' tell.

A Scottie dog.
Things I brought: A scrapbook my friends made for me as we left the USA, and my dogs!

Bachelorette party.

U of A football!

Etta's nose.

Reeses' nose.

Check out littlemissmomma’s I SPY project; see the things around her house and other’s too!
